Why do I need a root canal?
Deep cavities, traumas and cracks can affect the dental pulp without causing pain. The dental pulp is the inner part of the tooth that contains the blood vessels and nerves responsible for its vitality. If the pulp is damaged, irritated or infected, a root canal may be necessary to save the tooth.
What is root canal therapy?
Root canal therapy involves the removal of blood vessels and nerves from the dental pulp to devitalize the tooth. Once the pulp has been removed and the space is cleaned, it is filled with a natural rubber material to seal the space. Although the tooth is no longer alive, it can be saved by this treatment.
However, teeth that have undergone root canal treatment may still be prone to decay. What’s more, since they are no longer alive, they are more vulnerable to fracture. It is therefore advisable to protect the tooth with a crown to prolong its life. If properly cared for, a tooth treated in this way can last a lifetime.
