Why proceed with extraction?
While it’s advisable to find solutions to preserve a patient’s natural teeth, there are situations where tooth extraction is a proposed treatment.
Tooth extraction is recommended in a number of situations:
- A tooth whose cavities have spread and can no longer be treated;
- A tooth that no longer has sufficient bone to hold it in place (often due to periodontal disease);
- A tooth with a severe crack or fracture;
- A primary tooth that doesn’t leave enough room for the permanent teeth;
- A wisdom tooth that is badly positioned and/or causes pain.
Extraction of wisdom teeth
Wisdom teeth, also known as third molars, are located at the back of the mouth and are the last set of molars to develop. They often emerge during adolescence or early adulthood and can become wedged or misaligned in the oral space. This can make them difficult to clean and maintain, increasing the risk of cavities and dental infections.
